Our Medical Professional Working Group (MPWG) has been involved in many areas, from supporting the development of the Contraceptive Counselling Card with funding supporting from Merk Sharp & Dohme (MSD), developing IUD standards with funding support from Bayer, and providing input to the planning of the Australasian Sexual Health Alliance Conference in Darwin in October 2013. The MPWG is also updating the pre-pregnancy checklist and contributed to the development of the contraceptive search filters in conjunction with Flinders University.
The MPWG consists of Medical Directors, Senior Medical Officers, and Medical Educators from SH&FPA’s Member Organisations. Members collaborate to facilitate Sexual and Reproductive Health Education and Clinical Training for medical practitioners, provide an evidence-based medical perspective for SH&FPA position statements and media enquiries, and work to develop relationships with other medical organisations around relevant issues to sexual and reproductive health.
SH&FPA has created a national curriculum that is a national education program for medical practitioners. The document remains extensively based on the comprehensive 1997 Family Planning South Australia Curriculum Document for the Certificate in Sexual Health. This certificate was renamed the Sexual Health & Family Planning Australia Certificate in Sexual and Reproductive Health in 2000 to reflect the work of the national committee and the change in name of the national body. The national document was further revised in 2008 by the senior medical staff of the state members of SH&FPA to include current medical developments in medical education and adult learning needs, and, in particular, to reflect the RACGP QI&CPD requirements.
