Sexual Health & Family Planning Australia (SH&FPA) has partnered with Flinders Filters in a pilot project to develop search filters on topics of prime importance to the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) community. The broader goal of this project was to demonstrate the potential for this quick and reliable form of literature retrieval to improve evidence-based practice and policy development amongst Australian SRH service providers and practitioners.
At the start of the project, a working group comprising SH&FPA stakeholders identified four key topics that could potentially benefit from a search filter approach to literature retrieval. These were: Long acting reversible contraception (LARC), emergency contraception, general, all-inclusive ‘contraception’, and the role of contraception in preventing abortion.
Validated search filters were developed for the topics of LARC and contraception. Experimental search strategies were developed for emergency contraception and abortion.
It is envisaged that these search filters and strategies will eventually join a range of other search products to form an invaluable part of an open access SRH Knowledge Hub. This Hub will bring together SRH information, evidence, tools and resources in order to build the capacity of the SRH sector, assist guideline development, and inform policy decisions that are more in touch with the needs of the community, service providers and policy makers.”
